Langer: “I´m not here to change the reality – but to make fun of it”

Sergio Langer works in an art studio, on a simple chair. He draws ugly people – both in appearance, and spirit – because his art is seasoned with truth. Stereotypes make him dizzy – he laughs at them, at the social vicissitudes, and the middle class of the city. He laughs every day through his drawings, which are published in Clarin, the daily newspaper with the highest level of distribution in Argentina.

Si el de prostituta es el oficio más viejo del mundo, el segundo es el de bufón. Y tal vez los comediantes de stand up comedy sean la versión más reciente de ese arte. Para los legos, puede reconocerse un espectáculo de este estilo cuando un artista, muñido tan sólo de un micrófono, hace el deleite de todo un auditorio a base de observaciones cotidianas condimentadas con técnicas del género y una poca de “acting”.

Broken Buenos Aires – The City In Cross-Light

Another view: lets explore the possibility of removing the stigma that is attached to “living in a slum” (or “villa de emergencia”) – the poorest neighborhoods of the city. Think of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, or the bustees of Bombay. In the workshops of the PH15 Foundation, kids and teenagers – aged between 9 and 25 years old – try to find a way of playing with light. They learn how to handle a camera, and to take photos that can be used as an expression of their reality – taken from their own perspectives. At the crossroad of this city, culture can also speak about forgotten people. Where creativity can lead to social inclusion; the stories of those kids who also learned about pride, prejudice, and prefabricated political scenes.

Hay pocos nombres con gravedad propia. Hermenegildo Sábat, el artista, el cronista gráfico de todos los días en Clarín, el ciudadano ilustre de Buenos Aires, tal vez sea uno de esos personajes. Pocos tan respetados y admirados aquí y en todo el mundo. En esta entrevista, el hombre detrás de la leyenda no puede disimular su simpatía, aún ante la incomodidad del reconocimiento y los micrófonos.
